VOASW ribbon cutting celebration for a brand new center!

We held a ribbon cutting for our new 10,000 sq. ft. Resource and Recovery Center on Wednesday, November 14. The new Resource & Recovery Center is located at 4525 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego, CA 92120.

The Resource and Recovery Center will serve approximately 500 individuals annually from our Renaissance Treatment Center (RTC), a substance abuse addiction treatment program. Clients currently in RTC treatment or who have recently completed treatment and opt to continue their recovery will find support at the Resource and Recovery Center. The center services include an active alumni club, individual and family counseling, educational workshops, job readiness workshops, employment assistance, housing assistance, computer literacy, peer support meetings, therapeutic counseling, health clinics and fitness classes.

We are so excited to add this vital new tool to our services for those on the road to recovery from addiction. Completing our residential treatment program is hugely important. Far too often, though, do our clients continue needing support, guidance, and resources after they have left our program at Renaissance Treatment Center. The Resource and Recovery Center will take an “it takes a village” approach to the next steps in their return to a vibrant and more productive life. Not only will we welcome in clients, but we will also have programs that their families can participate in. A recovering addicts circle of support is so important to their lifelong sobriety and success, so it is important that we support their entire village, too.

At the event, President & CEO Gerald McFadden spoke first about the details of what the center will offer and the role it will play in our full range of services. Next invited to speak was Maria Morgan from the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency; Maria spoke about the shifting nature of funding for recovery programs and how we are rising to meet the desires of funders and what they want to see.

After, Anthony Nguyen was invited up to present a proclamation from the office of Congressman Scott Peters. Following this, District Attorney Summer Stephan spoke about the relationship between law enforcement and social services agencies, and how Volunteers of America Southwest continues to work with the DA’s office to reduce the number of opioid deaths in the county. The speaking portion was closed out by Board Chair Charles Hartfordwho delivered a heartfelt story about personal loss and the importance of addiction recovery services. Speakers and guests then went outside to officially cut the ribbon and open the new center!
